Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

Mercedes-Benz just presented a brand new car.

A coupe that is a station wagon that isn’t any of those and is. or something. When the first CLS came out they called it a four door coupe and they still do. since then this… paradox, has been adapted by other car manufacturers too. To add one on top, the Mercedes-Benz designers and engineers have added another part. A higher roofline and through that transforming the car to what I would normally call a station wagon. A very beautiful and exotic one if you ask me.

Its called the CLS Shooting Brake.

And I think it is well deserved. The posh term I mean. Instead of station wagon or T-Model or anything like that. The CLS already is an eyecatcher, the Shooting Break is the even nice car in my opinion. The added roofline somehow transforms its stance to a more powerful and impressive form. And that from every side and angle, which is not a given these days in the car world.

The looks, as always are a matter of taste and the looks of the CLS Shooting Brake certainly hit mine. One important fact though for me was when talking to one of the Designers to see how passionate he was and how the whole CLS project came about and especially the Shooting Brake basically rose from the most unlikely place. The passion the Shooting Brake was designed and built with transports into the car. From its looks to the feel when you sit in it and especially when you drive it.

You approach the car with its huge dimensions and think of the old Cadillacs of the 60s. The beautiful tuscan sunlight reflection on the matte silky white paint and you expect to be seated comfortably sitting on clouds. Yeah, drama mode is on right now, but stay with me here. All this is and feels as it seems and even a tall and big guy like me sits very well in the drivers seat of the car, even-though getting into it feels more like getting into a sportscar as the roofline is very low. Fear not though, you get used to it pretty quickly. Driving only the CLS SB 500 and the AMG 63 version of the car I cannot speak about the smaller versions (engine wise) yet, but I also only hear the best things about them.

I was thinking about to how to approach the whole driving experience with the CLS Shooting Brake. There are a lot of good posts out there and some that get much more into detail that I will and I will link them up at the bottom of this, but something I want to point out specifically is what an amazing drivers car the CLS Shooting Brake is. That you can design and engineer a big and spacious car like that and get it to drive and behave as dynamic, sporty and yet comfortable as the CLS Shooting Brake does. We drove on those wonderful roads in Tuscany, curvy, going up and down. You do not feel its size or weight. The steering is on point, letting you steer that behemoth nimble and elegantly around one of the most beautiful sceneries in the world. Not to go completely crazy here, but exactly one day before I was driving the latest Mercedes-Benz SL 500 on the beautiful Roads of the Nappa Valley and the SL certainly felt much rougher and a little heavier. Maybe out of safety reasons the car is set up like that, but it felt to be balanced more towards the front when driving more swiftly through the winding roads and curves. Not really understeering, but always the feeling that it would be shortly. I am not trying to diss the SL, but rather point out the fantastic driving abilities of the CLS Shooting Brake. There was no understeering in tight and fast corners, there was not oversteering (unless you obviously would provoke it roughly). The chassis in the AMG version is obviously much nicer as you can switch to different modes and go relatively hard, but there should be options for the “regular” models too. If you ever get the chance or you are uncertain if this is the car for you and especially if you are in for a car with more space than a regular sedan… look at this puppy and give it a chance. Test drive it and not only the high horsepower versions.
