yup! after ages and probably from now on much more often I went to the zoo.
ben had asked me if I would join him and so we met up there! mirco joined us too and so rented a little wagon for our equipment and shot our way through the wild animals 
attaked by pelicas, tricked by red pandas and left in the rain by the weather gods we still made it.

tina (the beautiful lady in the pictures) called me up earlier this week, telling me she had cornrows done and wanted to take some pictures with them. so far so good, but she only would keep them for a few days, so after quite a lot of planning and calling people up and trying to get the timing right we decided to shoot at a friends company. he has this one garage style place where they store cars and fix ‘em from time to time. only bugger was we started around nine in the evening.
I know, doesn’t sound too bad, isn’t actually until you didn’t get much sleep the night before, wont get enough sleep that night also as you shoot late and have to get up early. I am wining again eh?! well… either way it was well worth it.
after the VSP workshop with joe mcnally “just” having 3 strobes felt not enough in the beginnig. especially if one is bound on the camera as a commander, but we managed and managed well as I feel so far.
a sb-900 is a very versatile and powerful piece of equipment and the ability to zoom with it is pure gold. it just took one sb to immitate the late evening sun through the four by three meters gate of the building, zoomed to 180mm I think.
one flash was, at least in the beginning also geled with a CTO and snooted to light up her face. we soon took the snoot away though to also get her legs lit up, which worked perfectly well.
it was a lot of fun right away. tina knows how to move, dance and jump and is a very nice and easy gal. I only need to get a bit more exercise shooting dancing/moving subjects. I also wasn’t to sure about the metering and in the middle of it apparently to concentrated try around.
we then switched over to another location within the building. basically the restrooms for the mechanics and all. nice n’ dirty. two sides of that room had a window, which was perfect for lighting the room and also shooting into it. one of he windows was cracked and also missing a part. I shot through that crack most of the time as it gave a nice effect to the photos. subtle, but nice. one flash was outside the other window pointing inside with a green gel attached.
being very lucky I had a VAL on location who helped me to light up her face with a small led flashlight. well it was a try… with no softening it was just to fake and with a “softbox” or sheet of paper os so it just would not be light enough.
after that we moved to the back of the building and there I struggled a bit with the light and we ended up with a rather easy solution. just put the CTO geled flash up, zoomed out and go.
I am very determined though to go back and tackle that part of the place again and a bit better or more elaborate. although the outcome of those pictures isn’t all that bad now, is it?!

I had a very long sleep actually. and now just edited all these videos I took and trimmed them down to some bearable and viewable length. also I had to reselect all the photos as lightroom somehow didn’t save all my metadata. or I just missed something. ah well.
anyway, as I recap the week its just amazingly cool how much we learned in such a quite short time and not only about the the nikon flashes and the whole system, but also about working under a certain pressure, with others in small and big groups. on top of all that we had very nice food, good drinks and just the best weather we could have wished for.
and if thats not enough I am very happy to have had the opportunity to meet a bunch of very very nice and cool people from all around the world. it was very nice spending this week and workshop with you guys and I hope we will meet again at some point (and don’t forget photokina next year).
a big thank you to joe mcnally who is as amazing in real life as you would guess from his videos and books. a wonderful teacher, a great person and very patient with us. he knows so much and has so much experience regarding photography that even just hanging around with him would have been a sheer pleasure and certainly would have been very helpful. thank you for all the effort and help for us to develop and succeed in what we love to do!
last but not least a big thanks to marzia gasparotti and jonathan maher who are running vsp workshops and put together this great workshop. its was a great experience and I loved the personal feeling to it all, from beginnig to end. jonathan was there for us always leading the pack if it was for the feeding or the shootings and all. he is just a great sport and I can only urge people interested in photography and photoworkshop to check their array of workshops and enjoy a wonderful time with them. good meeting you jonathan!
even if I didn’t succeed as much as I would have liked in the specific shootings I am extremly pleased with what I’ve learned. I will put up the final shots all together I think here and probably do at least on seperate blogpost going into a few details about that shooting.
man I was tired and my feet and legs hurt. and it’s partly my own fault as I always stayed up uploading, backing up and trying to get the videos done so I am really short on sleep at the moment. and for the hurting feet… well… I should probably man up and just shut up.
I have a lot of new ideas floating around in my head and taking more and more shape. it is so great being surrounded by gifted people and inspireing artist, especially like joe mcnally, but also the other participants. I will put a little link collection to a few of their portfolios at the end of this post.
what else can I tell you… oh of course on really good tip for venice in the summer… MOSQUITO REPELLENT!!! those suckers feasted on my legs like there’s no tomorrow. I will spare you and not post any pictures, because it ain’t nice. and aparently I have developed a very useless skill of banging my head really hard against things. once getting out of the shower two days ago and then again today as I was putting my luggage into the luggageroom at the hotel. I nearly passed out. well at least it was the other side of my head and it feels kinda symetrical. oh boy.
and I am very happy that I for some reason do not have a german accent when talking english, well most of the time anyway, but a rather strange mix in british and californinan. well all that is according to roel. tststs… DUUUUUUUUDE!
there is one baaaaaaad thing about this whole experience though… a very bad thing. and I urge you to be cautious… attending a workshop like this, being surrounded by nice people, geeks just like you with an interest in something that is connected to billion dollar industry, you end up with an urgent wishlist for new equipment that most likely send your bankaccount into the nirvana and your partner probably into psychiatric care.
and yeah I know what you are about to say… “man its not the equipment that take the pictures its the photographer” and I agree completely, BUT it can make your life so much easier when you have some decent equipment. and my first purchase will probably go towards a nice set of c-stands.
oh talking about c-stand I completely forgot to thank marco who was there providing a lot of the great equipment and carrying all that immensley heavy stuff around all the time.

sorry I didn’t upload anything yesterday, but when I got to my room I needed to sleep quickly as we where starting at 4am this morning again. but here we are.
and the ones from hour ballerina sunrise shoot in plaza san marco. beautiful location, weather and dancers. it was just amazing. I can’t wait to show you the results of these shoots! until the I hope you’ll enjoy these.
